In the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia, there is a Franciscan monastery that has extended a warm welcome to a monk with four legs. Carmelo, an abandoned schnauzer, was discovered at the monastery that was named for Saint Francis of Assisi, a Roman Catholic saint noted for his love and compassion for animals. The Franciscan brotherhood took a liking to the young dog and decided to raise it as the monastery’s mascot.

Friar Bigotón, whose name humorously translates to “Brother Mustache,” was presented with a small habit, which he proudly wears as he explores his new dwellings and receives a lot of attention from his compassionate saviors. Friar Bigotón was rescued by a group of people who were compassionate toward him. Friar Jorge Fernandez stated in an interview with The Dodo that his life is centered on jogging and playing. There is a tremendous lot of affection for him among those who are considered to be his brothers in this place. “God created him in his own image.” Friar Mustache’s new life, on the other hand, hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park for him. It is clear from the series of photographs that he has posted on Facebook that he takes his religious responsibilities extremely seriously.

Friar Bigotón’s lifesaving adoption was coordinated by Proyecto Narices Frias (“The Cold Nose Project”), a local animal rescue organization. The Cochabamba monastery and Proyecto Narices Frias hope the heartwarming story of the dog’s new life will inspire other compassionate religious groups. “If all churches of our country adopted a dog and looked after him like Friar Bigotón,” the group wrote in a Facebook post, “we believe the parishioners would follow his example.”

Friar Bigotón is a former stray dog and the newest Franciscan brotherhood in Cochabamba.
