Hi there! I am Deirdre Denali Rosenberg. I’m glad you’re here. Since I was a tiny kid, I was able to wander the rocky peaks of forests and high mountains. Being friendly with trees and wildlife alike, I found solace and freedom in this jungle space. My favorite little animal for as long as I can remember is the American Pico, A friend who lives in alpine habitats. Also, Pokémon Pikachu is based on these animals!
Their habitat is unbelievably extreme in terms of terrain and conditions. And wow, pica has evolved to grow in these cold extremes. So today, I would like to share a little American pika love. They are cute, amazing, they are tough climbers!

Unlike many other animals that live in refrigerated conditions, the American pica does not hibernate. Instead, they work throughout the summer to collect tundra grass, which they turn into haystacks: large mounds of grass that dry out in the sun. Summer is when Pica is most active, bordering across mouth-watering thallus fields! They always eat this hay in autumn / winter / spring and live under the thalamus for about seven months of the year. Once in a while, patiently, you can see them coming out of their cozy winter caves. run through the snow, and graze on the grass as they work hard to prepare.

As our climate changes, Pica finds it difficult to adapt. They stop living when the temperature exceeds 75 degrees Fahrenheit for a long time. And that’s a big issue! Pika has become an indicator of climate change, and their numbers have declined significantly over the decades. But through my research, I find some hope that tells me that not everything is lost with this amazing creature. I have met several special colonies that have descended from the slope of the lowlands. This allows them to find cool, rocky, and shady habitats along the mountain stream. It’s fascinating and shows that they are adapting, even if it’s too late to adapt to a rapidly changing planet.
