Dan Polly, a fourth-generation woodworker, transforms redesigned wood into small cabins that look like they’re straight from a fairy tale. Whether it’s a sauna, an outhouse, a shed, or a real home, the artist is able to create structures reminiscent of a Tim Burton movie – providing a quirky balance of gothic culture and playfulness.
When the designer’s visually eccentric creations come to life, one feels as if they have entered a different universe. In this world, a magical revival surrounds Polly’s unique work and allows viewers to see that there can be a playful side to the architecture.
Apparently, there is even a considerable history behind these absurd designs. Polly’s grandfather immigrated to the United States from Switzerland in the 1800s and began the art of barn building. Since then, the Polly family has continued this fascinating trade, which has been part of their heritage for nearly two centuries.
“When I uncover an old barn or shed, I realize that it may have been the wood my grandfather used 100 years ago. Respect for the craftsmen and craftsmen of the past and the wood they used I think every new creation I create is different. Until you demolish the old barn, you can not imagine the hard work that the artisans of the old world did to build it. Each of them was a work of art.
